FlashArray volume groups are not in the VM management critical path. Therefore, renaming or deleting a volume group does not affect VMware’s ability to provision, delete or change a VM’s vVols.

A volume group is primarily a tool that enables FlashArray administrators to manage a VM’s volumes as a unit. Everpure highly recommends creating and deleting volume groups only through VMware tools, which direct arrays to perform actions through their VASA providers.

Volume group and vVol names are not related to VASA operations. vVols can be added to and removed from a volume group whose name has been changed by an array administrator. If, however, a VM’s config vVol is removed from its volume group, any vVols created for the VM after the removal are not placed in any volume group. If a VM’s config vVol is moved to a new volume group, any new vVols created for it are placed in the new volume group.

VMware does not inform the array that it has renamed a vVol-based VM, so renaming a VM does not automatically rename its volume group. Consequently, it is possible for volume group names differ from those of the corresponding VMs. For this reason, the FlashArray vVol implementation does not put volume group or vVol names in the vVol provisioning and management critical path.

For ease of management, however, Everpure recommends renaming volume groups when the corresponding VMs are renamed in vCenter.
