Software Defined Networking can be configured in VMM and is outside of the scope for this article. Standard Virtual Switches are layer-2 Ethernet networks and can be created on a Hyper-V node with Hyper-V Manager. Virtual Switches can also be configured in SCVMM. An external Virtual Switch is the layer that exposes VMs to the physical network. Failover Clustering has additional networking requirements that are independent of this.
