The primary management and orchestration platform for Hyper-V is Microsoft’s System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM). SCVMM is part of the Microsoft System Center suite. SCVMM is aware of local, shared, and network share-based storage architectures for the storage of VMs. Pure has a method of integrating with SCVMM to configure and present storage for Hyper-V VMs. To see the versions of SCVMM that Pure supports, consult the Microsoft Support Matrix in the Microsoft Platforms Guide.
Purity versions 4.6 and above support the Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S). SMI-S provides a single management standard for multiple storage vendors and devices within a network. SMIS-S is often paired with support for Service Location Protocol (SLP), which is used by SMI-S clients to identify resources. For FlashArray, SMI-S allows for integrated functionality with SCVMM for management operations including:
-
Physical package and internal sub-package information
-
Displaying storage capacity, storage pools, and allocation of capacity
-
LUN and snapshot management
-
iSCSI initiator and FC target port management event notifications
Enabling SMI-S on FlashArray is as simple as two sliders, as displayed.
For more information on SCVMM integration with FlashArray including supported versions of SCVMM, see the document “Storage Management Initiative Specification - SMI-S” in the Microsoft Platform Guide.
For a detailed How-To on configuration SCVMM with FlashArray see Hyper-V on Pure FlashArray How-To.
